Celebrating Design Brilliance – Takashi Niwa Architects Among VMARK 2025’s Outstanding Winners

In the dynamic landscape of Vietnam’s architectural development, Takashi Niwa Architects continues to affirm its pioneering position through two remarkable projects that embody cultural depth and humanistic values. In 2025, the firm was honored with two prestigious categories at the VMARK Vietnam Design Award, the national design award endorsed by the Vietnam Design Association (VDAS) — winning the Excellence Design Award by F&B. Hospitality Entrepreneurs at Design Voices #4 | Inspired by The Heritage for Sen Tây Hồ Restaurant, and the Excellence Award for Public Space Design for the Thủ Thiêm Pedestrian Bridge.

Though located in two different cities — one in the heart of Hanoi and the other in Ho Chi Minh City — both projects share a unified design philosophy: architecture as a bridge connecting people, culture, and nature.

Sen Tây Hồ – Reimagining the Essence of Vietnamese Gastronomy

As a long-standing culinary and cultural icon of Hanoi, Sen Tây Hồ has been re-envisioned by Takashi Niwa Architects into a space that celebrates the harmony between tradition and modernity.

Covering over 3,200 m², the restaurant’s layout is designed for versatility, accommodating various types of gatherings. Natural materials such as wood, bamboo, raw brick, and traditional paper are paired with natural light to evoke warmth and intimacy. Every design detail is thoughtfully crafted to “weave Vietnamese values”, allowing guests to experience the hospitality and cultural soul of Hanoi.

The project not only showcases Niwa’s creative mastery but also demonstrates how architecture can elevate dining into a cultural and emotional experience — transforming space into a medium of connection and storytelling.

Thủ Thiêm Pedestrian Bridge – A Symbol of Connection in Saigon

Meanwhile, the Thủ Thiêm Pedestrian Bridge envisions a future-forward Saigon — greener, friendlier, and more connected. Inspired by the nipa palm leaf, an iconic image of Southern Vietnam, the design symbolizes the intimate bond between people and nature.

Its 190-meter curved structure mimics the soft silhouette of a leaf, ensuring navigational clearance for river traffic while creating a graceful architectural landmark. Integrated systems such as recycled water features, mist cooling, and a large canopy help regulate the microclimate, offering pedestrians a comfortable urban walking experience. On both ends, the bridge extends into public green spaces, designed as open parks where residents can stroll, gather, and enjoy the city’s rhythm.

Human-Centered Architecture – The Signature of Takashi Niwa Architects

Both projects exemplify the studio’s guiding philosophy: “Respect the context – Enhance human experience – Design for sustainability.”

Aligned with the VMARK Vietnam Design Award 2025 theme, “Good Design . Good Business | Sustainable Development by Design,” the two works were highly praised by the international jury for their balanced integration of aesthetics, functionality, and cultural identity.

This double recognition not only marks a proud milestone for Takashi Niwa Architects, but also stands as a testament to the growth and maturity of Vietnamese architecture on the global stage — where every project tells a living story of people, heritage, and a sustainable future.
