CEO & Founder
Optimum Hospitality
John started his hospitality career in his native New Zealand where he owned a number of restaurants before moving to Australia and had a change of direction into hotels joining the Accor group in the early 90’s. He managed several properties around the country before transferring up to Thailand as the start of his career throughout Asia working in other countries in the region such as Indonesia, Singapore and Cambodia before moving to China where he changed his allegiance to Intercontinental Hotels. From there he was headhunted for the roll in the iconic Caravelle Hotel Saigon where he was GM then GD for 15 years. Recognising the growth potential of the hotel industry here, he decided it was time to move on to one last long term gig, so together with a colleague set up Optimum Hospitality, a full service hotel consultancy, asset management, advisory and independent management company for the region and have just opened their Indonesian office. Married to his beautiful wife Cass and with a daughter just finished her university studies in Singapore, and with so many friends in Vietnam this will be his home for many years to come.

Co-Founder & Creative Director
KulörGroup
Christopher Chua is the Co-Founder and Creative Director of KulörGroup, the boutique architecture and interior design studio he established in 2016. Working across hospitality master planning, architecture and interior design, he combines creative vision with a strong understanding of hotel operations, guest experience and environmental context. Prior to founding KulörGroup, Christopher served as Managing Director of BLINK Design Group. His international portfolio now spans the Maldives, Bali and the wider Asia-Pacific region, as well as projects in Latin America and the United States. From large-scale resort masterplans to the transformation of individual villas, his work is defined by a refined, contextually responsive and quietly distinctive design language. In the Maldives, Christopher’s portfolio includes collaborations with Aura Dhigu with Pulse Resorts, Sun Siyam, Soneva, Club Med and Seaside Finolhu, as well as the recently opened .here Maldives, a member of Design Hotels. Conceived around the natural contrasts of its setting—sunrise and sunset, overwater and island—the resort reflects his belief that architecture should respond sensitively to place rather than compete with it. In Bali, his work ranges from new-build hospitality projects for Conrad Hotels & Resorts to longstanding renovation collaborations with Padma, alongside projects for Accor’s Handwritten Collection. Each is shaped by a careful balance between contemporary hospitality expectations and the island’s cultural and architectural traditions. Christopher’s broader portfolio includes work with Six Senses, Hilton, IHG and LUX*, as well as hospitality brands including The Little Nell and Limelight Hotels, Motto and Rydges. Across every project, his approach remains consistent: to create hospitality experiences that are environmentally responsive, operationally considered and emotionally resonant. Christopher remains closely involved throughout the design process, ensuring that each project feels individual, grounded and enduring.
